Opioid Prescribing: Resources for Provider Education Requirements

Medical providers who prescribe opioids are required to complete certain training requirements on both a state and federal level. To assist with understanding and meeting these requirements, Copic has developed an Opioid Education Resources section on our website.

In particular, providers must now complete a new one-time, eight-hour training requirement issued by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. The details about this requirement are outlined in a letter released by the DEA, which is available at www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/pubs/docs/MATE_Training_Letter_Final.pdf

Copic's Opioid Education Resources are outlined below and are available on our website at https://www.copic.com/opioid-resources/

Opioid Continuing Education Requirements (by State) for Physicians

Over the last two renewal cycles for state medical licenses, several states where Copic provides medical professional liability insurance have required that practitioners licensed by those state boards must attest to having obtained education around opioids at the time of license renewal. Copic has compiled a list of state-level CME requirements related to opioid prescribing education requirements.

CME Opioid Education Resource List

Copic has created a CME Opioid Education Resource List that provides information on national organizations that offer CME education to meet newly enacted DEA requirements. Please note: a) many of the CME courses provided by these organizations are free; and b) these courses are from organizations outside of Copic and do not qualify for Copic points.
